Abstract

This essay discusses the dating of Arnold Schönberg's unfinished works and fragments, which is essential for understanding Schönberg's creative process. Case studies are used to show how musical-content, material and cross-work aspects must be combined in order to determine the date of composition of Schönberg's fragments as precisely as possible. This results in new dating for some of Schönberg's works, especially in the context of his ‘Dehmel Year’ in 1899 and his Rilke settings around 1914.
