The article deals with the operativity of musical writing in Arnold Schönberg's Wind Quintet op. 26. The quintet, composed between 1923 and 1924, is one of Schönberg's first compositions based on the method of composition with twelve notes related only to each other. From this point of view, the functions that writing fulfils in Schönberg's compositional working process will be examined. Different workshop materials are also taken into account. The writing space is to be understood as the material and mental place of writing. Four aspects of the operativity of musical writing are examined in more detail.
